About Us

Dr. Keith Hanlon

Keith has always had a love of music, whether in an orchestra, military band, pit orchestra, or choir. He started playing flute in 4th grade and could often be heard playing for service at the cathedral with his mother Carol, an organist. Keith earned his DMA in Flute Performance from West Virginia University in 2017. He has served as faculty at Frostburg State University, Fairmont State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Brightpoint Community College. He taught courses in applied flute, music theory and aural skills, music history, and music appreciation. He also spent eight years serving as a military musician in the active-duty Army and in the Army National Guard.

Keith’s interest in repair began when he found a technician’s repair manual at the local library. He took a basic repair course for band directors during his undergraduate coursework at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and was asked to do woodwind repair work for the college marching band. During his military service, he worked in the unit repair shop as a woodwind specialist. Over the years, he took many opportunities to apprentice with flute repair technicians. In 2016, Keith became the flute and piccolo repair specialist for the Western Maryland Music Center in Cumberland, MD. In 2018, Keith joined the Flute Authority team as a Repair Technician and Educational Consultant.

Keith is an active performer in the community, playing principal flute for the Ottumwa Symphony as well as many other large and chamber ensembles. He is a founding member of the Iowa City Flute Choir and NFA LGBTQIA+ Flute Choir, where he plays contrasbass. Keith plays flute and piccolo for the Keystone Wind Ensemble and can be heard on many of their recordings.

Dr. Hanlon is a low flutes artist and clinician for Trevor James Flutes, Clinician for Miyazawa flutes, and an artist for Pettry Piccolos. Keith is a certified Pettry “Piccolologist,” making Flute Authority an authorized repair center for Pettry Piccolos.

Keith is an animal lover and enjoys spending time with his dog Ginger, and cats, Harper and Jester. He is an avid RPG’er and plays Daggerheart on the weekends.
